Actress Zhou Xun Takes "Time Out"

2008-05-28 13:37:47 CRIENGLISH.com

Do actresses share an affinity for magazines? First there was Xu Jinglei who launched a webzine. She was followed by Zhao Wei with a similar publication. And now, Zhou Xun has become the editor of a magazine.

Thirty-one-year-old Zhou is the cover girl and guest editor for the latest issue of all three China-published editions of Time Out, a London-based urban entertainment magazine, Web news portal Sina.com.cn reports.

Each magazine, Time Out Beijing, Time Out Shanghai and the expat-favorite Time Out English, features stories and city guides on green living, which are highlighted by a proposal written by Zhou Xun calling for environmental protection.

"How to let more people know there is no such thing as 'none of my business'?" Zhou Xun wrote in the proposal for Time Out Beijing. "Your awareness adds to the whole anti-global warming endeavor."

Zhou Xun has taken on many roles at the magazine: "Topical discussions, interviews, proofing, editing. I was involved in each part of the process," the actress says.

Time Out invited Zhou Xun on board because the green-living theme of its latest issue coincided with the actress' newly-appointed UNDP role, according to the magazine's Chinese editor-in-chief Li Duoyu.

Last month, Zhou Xun became a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations Development Programme, for her ability to raise environmental awareness around China.

Todd's Cannes Diary: Day Four: Painted Skin

First, as stated yesterday, I made checking out Painted Skin a priority today. Now, when this was first announced there was mixed in with a good amount of excitement also a certain amount of sighing and wondering why the world needs another glossy neo-wuxia film. Well, let me say this. After watching the promo I immediately turned to the man with me from the production company and said, "Wow. They haven't made a film like this in Hong Kong for a long time." To which he simply smiled and said, "I know." This one's way more Bride With White Hair than Hero and it looks very promising.

HONG KONG -- "Painted Skin" will be the first in a trilogy of feature film adaptations of China's most famous classic ghost stories and the start of a series of TV spinoffs, Kathy Lan, president and managing director of Golden Sun Films told The Hollywood Reporter Wednesday.

Given Chinese censors' tastes, the adaptations of "Liaozhai Zhiyi" (Strange Stories from a Chinese Studio) will move away from horror in favor the fantastic, Lan said.

The $15 million fantasy "Skin" is set to release on September 28 on over 1,100 screens in China, Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand. It was directed by Gordon Chan ("The Medallion") and stars martial arts idol Donnie Yen ("Dragon Tiger Gate") and actresses Zhou Xun ("The Banquet") and Zhao Wei ("Red Cliffs").

"Skin" the feature will be distributed in China by the Shanghai Film Group and in the rest of Asia by the newly-established Golden Sun subsidiary Eastern Mordor Film Co. Lan hopes to conclude sales to Europe and Japan at the upcoming Cannes market, where Golden Sun will screen 20 minutes of footage.

"Skin" was produced by eight investors including China's Ningxia Film Studio and the Shanghai Film Group, Singapore's Mediacorp Raintree Pictures and Hong Kong's Golden Sun Films and Salon Multimedia Center. Salon provided equipment.

We decied to make donations together to help unlucky people. Because I was busy in the afternoon, couldn't join the ceremony of China Red Corss Society. But I knew that many stars like Zhao Wei, Zhang Zi Yi had actual actions to help families in earthquake area to rebuild their houses. Hopefully, all friends are safe"

Beside relatives and friends, Zhou Xun cares about children in a primary school in remote area in Sichuan: "In 2006 I attended a television program in which I had an opportunity to become a teacher in a primary school in Sichuan for 3 days. I played with children and taught them how to write. At that time there was only one teacher, also a student in school. He helped me prepare lesson. I really felt anxious althought nobody knew who I am. After that I visited children's familes and subsidized some of them. Now they often send letters to me. After this earthquake, I make a phone call to school and knew that they all were dafe, houses were not affected. Maybe teachers will teach children how to face earthquakes".

In Sohu's aid program, Zhou Xun made a donation of 100,000 Yuan.
