To leverage Zhou Xun's star power to motivate individuals to take part in the fight against climate change, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) announced on Monday that the Chinese actress will serve as its first National Goodwill Ambassador (NGWA) with a special focus on promoting environmental sustainability. A multimedia awareness campaign titled "Our Part," featuring Zhou Xun and the UNDP advocating simple, effective lifestyle changes to reduce carbon footprints and combat climate change was also released.

"Climate change has become the defining issue of our time, set to transform the very way we live," Khalid Malik, UN resident coordinator and UNDP resident representative in China, said.

Zhou Xun, one of China's biggest stars, is very active in environmental protection and sets a good example in her own life.

When talking about her opinion of environmental protection, Zhou Xun cited her own conservation measures as examples. She said that when brushing her teeth, she turns off the water after wetting the toothbrush, rather than letting the water run. She chooses to ride a bike or walk on foot rather than drive a car. She said that environmental protection should not be compulsory; it should be a voluntary lifestyle. The goal is to find a clever way to make green tips hip, fashionable, and fun.

UNDP is the UN's global development network, which advocates for change and connects countries through knowledge, experience and programs to help people build better lives. UNDP has six global goodwill ambassadors, Brazilian soccer legend Ronaldo, Zinedine Zidane form France, Didier Drogba from Cote d'Ivoire, tennis star Maria Sharapova, Japanese actress Misako Kono, and Crown Prince Haakon Magnus of Norway.
